that love the polls but only when the polls are going their way. right now, that would be the romney campaign. new polling in battleground states tonight, the latest cnn/orc survey in ohio done entirely after the first debate, now showing a four point obama lead. that's a statistical tie. it is a significant change from the seven to ten point lead the president enjoyed before the debate. new polling as well from sienna college that shows a statistical tie in pennsylvania. that's based on surveys done both before and after the debate and nationally in gallup's daily tracking poll which covers october 2nd through the 8th, mitt romney now holds a two point edge. today, gallup shifted from registered to likely voters, which tends to favor republicans. that said, though, it is hard to find any evidence, any evidence that president obama escaped denver without at least some damage. the only question being how severe and how long-lasting. that seems hard to dispute. just as it's hard to dispute that prior to the debate, mr. romney was getting hammered in the polls. keeping them honest thoug

, a major shake-up in the polls. only 29 days before the presidential election. mitt romney clearly riding very high since his strong showing in the first presidential debate. and now he has taken the lead in a closely watched and highly respected poll. take a look at these numbers just released by the pew research center. mitt romney now four points ahead of president obama among likely voters nationwide, erasing the president's eight-point lead before the first debate. let's go deeper right now with our chief political analyst gloria borger, she's joining us. it's clear that that debate has really, really helped mitt romney. >> yeah, i don't think the romney campaign could have wanted to do any more with this debate than they did. if you look across the board at these numbers, wolf, romney has made gains in almost every area including somebody who's better able to improve the jobs situation. he leads -- romney leads obama by eight points on that. so whether it's on the economy, whether it's on leadership, he's now tied with the president. as far as leadership ability is concerned. so i t

. this afternoon pew released a poll that showed a dramatic shift toward romney. this poll covers the four days since the debate, and it has romney pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other poll. that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, editorial director of the "huffington post," and the honorable michael nutter, mayor of philadelphia and presidential surrogate in this tough campaign. gen

a similar poll. romney up by 4 points in the pew poll. in the swing states, mr. romney leading in colorado by 4. mr. obama leading in pennsylvania by 2, the right poll showing a tie in nevada. the president up in new hampshire by 6 points. and really the one poll we waited on all day, the one poll that might matter more than any other single piece of data, the one piece we got today, president obama holding on to a 4-point lead in ohio. let's poll this one out. this is a cnn number from this afternoon. barack obama with an edge of 4 points in ohio, which is just outside the margin of error. it's far less than the 9-point leads in the survey not long ago. i should say to democrats and obama supporters, i'm sorry if i unleashed those numbers on you with a mature content warning label. but my friend e.j. dionne will be with us later. he says, i was talking with an old friend who was one of the nonpartisan polling outfits. we were discussing the large shifts in some of the polls on the presidential election and the feedback he receives whenever he puts out new numbers that make one side or the

romney is leading by two points. if you look at the trend line of recent polling, you can see that obama in the blue line really picked up in september following his convention. we all saw that happen but he dropped and romney started gaining in the past several days following the debate. and as you just mentioned, bob, from ohio the president's firewall, a new cnn/opinion research poll shows obama up by four, 51%/47% among likely voters. that poll was taken after the debate -- actually after the debate. before the debate obama had a wider margin. i should point out something i learned today which i think you guys probably already know. a like lib voter as opposed to a registered voter who is a registered voter when asked from one to ten are you likely to vod, nine or ten. second question did you vote in 2010 or 2008, if you say yes to either of those three -- two out of those three, you are considered a likely voter. >> that's right. >> if you just voted in '08 and '10, that's good enough. if you voted in '08 but you say your chances are 9 to 10 -- between 1 and 10, then you're a likely
